You told your landlord days ago, but nothing has been fixed.
You need a safe home for you and your family, and should not have to keep chasing your landlord between rides or on your days off.
If your landlord will not make needed housing repairs, here are some steps you can take.
1. Tell Your Landlord in Writing
You may have called your landlord or talked to them in person. It is still a good idea to put your repair request in writing.
Send a text, email, letter, or repair request. Say what is wrong and when you first saw the problem. Keep a copy of what you send.
This can help show that you told your landlord about the issue.
2. Take Photos and Videos
Use your phone to take photos or videos of the problem.
For example, if you have a leak, take photos of the water and any harm to your walls, roof, floor, or things in your home.
If the problem gets worse, take more photos. Keep them in a safe place. They may help you later.
3. Keep a Record
You should keep track of the time you spend trying to get the problem fixed.
Write down:
- When you first saw the problem
- When you told your landlord
- Each time you asked for help
- When someone came to look at the problem
- When repairs were made
- How long the problem went on
Also keep your texts, emails, photos, and other proof.
4. Report a Serious Problem
If your landlord still will not fix the problem, you may be able to report it to your local housing or building office.
Some issues may need fast help. This can include no heat, no water, gas leaks, bad wiring, pests, mold, or other things that may put you or your family at risk.
The rules can be different based on where you live.
When Should You Talk to a Lawyer?
It may be time to get legal help if:
- The problem is not safe
- Your landlord keeps ignoring you
- You get an eviction notice
- Your landlord tries to punish you for asking for repairs
- You are not sure what rights you have
Rideshare Legal Services can help with housing legal issues. A lawyer can look at your case, explain your rights in plain words, and help you work out what to do next.
